Dairy Creek is a host site for The First Tee Central Coast on Friday afternoons. This is a great way to introduce young athletes to the game of golf and teach them valuable life skills to help them to be great people. Not to mention that parents get to play the course for just $5 while their young golfers are in programming sessions.

Sofie Aagaard

Sofie is a former touring professional, three‐time All‐American, and two‐time world amateur team champion who started playing golf early in life. Throughout her career as a player, she has competed on an international level in amateur golf (with the Swedish national team), and played college golf at University of California. Following her college golf career she spent 6 years competing as a professional on the Symetra Tour, LPGA tour, and competed in two U.S. Women’s Open Championships.

Sofie’s coaching career began with the University of California, Berkeley where she was the Assistant Coach. In2015, Sofie became the Head Coach for the Cal Poly Women’s Golf Team. During her tenure she has successfully lead the team improving individual as well as team scoring and performances. This culminated in Cal Poly Women’s Golf winning their first Conference Championship title in 2017. Sofie was bestowed the Big West Conference Coach of the Year Award in both 2016 and 2017.

Scott Cartwright has lived in San Luis Obispo since 1990 and have been involved with many youth activities within the County while he and his wife Brenda raised their two kids Audrey and Bradley into the adults they have now become. He was a multisport athlete in college playing both baseball and golf and continued to play both sports professionally after graduating. Scott’s professional golf career has included many PGA Tour, Web.com Tour, and PGA Club Professional Championship appearances.

Scott became a PGA Member in 1981 and has been teaching, playing, and promoting the game of golf ever since. He has served as the Junior Golf Director for the Southern California PGA, as well as the Head Golf Professional at both Mountain View Country Club and San Luis Obispo Country Club before accepting his current position as the Head Golf Coach for Cal Poly’s Men’s Golf team.

For the past 35+ Years Billy has worked as a Cart & Range Assistant, Assistant Pro, Head Pro, Director of Instruction & Teaching Professional. Billy is currently the PGA Director of Instruction at the Blacklake Golf Resort and we are happy to have him now teaching at Dairy Creek Golf Course. It is quite possible that you have heard Billy’s voice as he has been a Co‐Host of Golf Talk Radio heard on KVEC, KKAL, and ESPN radio for nearly 20 years.

Billy’s true passion is with youth development and working with junior golfers. He has focused his passion with The First Tee Central Coast as the Program Director for more than 14 years. Billy is also the Lead First Tee Coach at the Blacklake Golf Resort, Sea Pines Golf Resort, and Morro Bay Golf Course. He has been awarded the distinction of The First Tee Master Coach (one of only eight in the nation) as well as being a National Coach Trainer for The First Tee. Billy’s other awards include the 2013 Southern California PGA Junior Golf Leader of the Year, the 2011, 2013 & 2017 Youth Player Development Award Winner, of the Northern Chapter of SCPGA.

Mr. Gibbs’ playing experience includes competing in many professional tour events during the 80’s and 90’s and now plays for the love of the game. Billy’s outlook focuses on the “lighter side of things” with a sense of humor and a focus on kindness and respect. Billy lives in Nipomo, California with Josie, his wife of 23 years, and their two most amazing pets Brodie & Amber.

Steven is a Class A PGA Teaching Professional, U.S. Kids Golf Certified Coach, and a graduate of Louisiana State University with over 20 years of professional experience in the golf industry. He has competed in numerous professional and amateur tournaments nationwide and continues to compete in the Southern California PGA. Throughout his career Steven has also made appearances on the PGA, Web.com, Champions, and LPGA tours as a professional caddie as well as exclusive golf clubs.  In addition, he has assisted in the publishing of a book titled “How To Learn To Play Golf” a step by step guide to learning golf.  His unique insight into the game of golf developed from the beginning of his career where he was involved in the design, mapping, and construction of more than 50 golf courses domestic and international over a 10-year period.

Teaching Style:

Steven takes a Less is More Approach when it comes to teaching golf. The fewer moving parts the better chance for success. His methods for teaching are based on fundamentals, delivered from the student’s point of view, and designed to transfer from the range to the course.

Michael Samaniego has worked with the Central Coast Golf Community since 2004 where he started as an assistant golf professional with Sea Pines Golf Resort in Los Osos. Five years later he accepted a position as an assistant golf professional at Chalk Mountain golf course in Atascadero where he was later promoted to Head Golf professional. Michael served as the Head Golf Professional at Morro Bay Golf Course since 2014 until his retirement in January 2019. He enjoys teaching the game of golf and watching the transformation of his players. Above all, Michael believes that no matter what someone is doing, that it should first and foremost, be fun.

Teaching Style:

Regardless of the level of skill a player possesses, golf starts from the ground up. It is important to build a solid fundamental foundation of stance, posture, and grip. Michael believes that through drills and proper practice, players can build a more consistent swing by improving their movement patterns. He strives to provide his students with an understanding of the issues prohibiting them from playing their best golf as well as the steps that will enable them to improve their game. Michael can assist all levels of players, beginner or professional, to increase the amount of fun to be had on a golf course.

In 2014 Rory Doll turned professional after a successful college campaign. Playing at Nebraska Wesleyan University Rory was a two time All-American, four time All-Conference, 2014 Conference Champion, and the 2014 Mid-America Player of The Year. As a professional Rory competed on various mini tours and accumulated 10 top 5’s and a professional win. Highlights of Rory’s career were qualifying for the final stage of the US Open twice and competing against some of the best PGA tour players. As an instructor Rory quickly developed a passion for working with his students. In 2016 he went from an instructor to founding his own golf academy. Since that time he has developed his golf academy to be the largest on the Central Coast, working with everyone from beginners to professionals, specializing in junior golf. Rory constantly attends workshops, certification programs, and has mentorship from some of the top instructors in the world to continually bring his clients the very best method of instruction. Rory’s main passion is to equip his students with a path to improvement that is simple, effective, and gives them the opportunity to achieve their goals. In addition to golf instruction Rory is also the head coach of San Luis Obispo High Varsity Boys & Girls Golf Team, the co-founder of the Central Coast Invitation league, a in house league affiliated with the PGA Jr League program. Rory also is the co-chair of the AJGA event at Monarch Dunes. Rory also has affiliations with US Kids, The First Tee, and local junior tours.

Coach Darren is a Cal Poly professor who specializes in coaching and golf instruction. Darren Avrit currently has two sons competing in college on scholarships at high level programs. Darren is a certified first tee coach and enjoys running both the Monarch Dunes and Dairy Creek First Tee programs. Darren is also a junior instructor and focuses on junior group coaching, and private junior lessons. Darren brings fun and enjoyment into the game for young players while giving them great direction.
